And the Sun Shone Through

An update on our situation.

The IEP meeting was brutal. I took Cowboy and my mom (a retired K teacher) with me for moral support.

It seems state funding does not now fund aides in the class. So, he would be removed from class 2-3 hours a day for one-on-one study. I was devastated. "Special Ed." In my day, it was the death sentence.

Yet, I agreed. He had to learn and he wasn't learning like this.

So, I did.

Since September, our lives have changed. Dare I say it? For the BETTER.

He loves his resource teacher, Mrs. Debbie, VERY MUCH. And, she is doing wonders.

He received the first "Principal's Award" in his class. A new award which is basically...Most Improved. He has also received nothing but S's on his two report cards so far -- and they are standardized. It was more his behavior than his ability that caused this. And it is working out. He was supposed to write to 12 on his last report card....he wrote to 56....when he ran out of paper.

His language is improving ten-fold. People understand him. People besides me.

What I feared worst for him could be the best thing that ever happened to him. Mrs. Debbie obviously loves him. When I went into the follow-up meeting, she came in with Kleenex. I thought, "This cannot be good." However, it was for her. She adores him.

If anyone who has a LT child is reading this, know, it will get better. It will not be a quick fix, but it will happen. I can't tell you how happy I am when I get a report, "Super Great Week!"

In other news, I received a promotion at work. As long and hard as I have worked for this, it pales in comparison to my child's hard work. He is reading. He is adding. He is thriving. Thank God. I have my bad days, but they are becoming fewer and farther between.

I just thank Ange and Missy and all the others who have encouraged me along the way.

Go, Sistas.
